Cataracts

What are cataracts?

A cataract occurs when an eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. The condition itself is treatable with modern surgical techniques. Clouding of the lens causes obstruction and if left untreated this obstruction may eventually lead to total blindness.

How are Cataracts treated?

Most cataracts are due to aging. However, diabetes, steroid use, tobacco, trauma and some genetic diseases may also cause clouding of the lens. Cataracts are treated with surgery by removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial one.
